We save the lives of the animals that need us most - those at high risk of euthanasia. Most of our animals come from other shelters, where they have little chance of ever leaving. They are often considered unadoptable and destroyed.
Shelters are not the answer to unwanted animals. Many are euthanized due to lack of space and resources and the ‘lucky’ ones often develop behavioral problems due to the stressful environment.
We think that every animal deserves another chance. No animal that arrives at Famous Fido with a chance for a healthy and happy life is declined medical treatment or behavioral therapy.
Spaying and neutering is only part of the answer to the animal problem in Chicago. It is helping to drastically reduce the number of unwanted animals being born, but there is more to be done. We must put an end to the horror of puppy mills. We must educate people so that they understand that abandonment is not an acceptable option for their unwanted animal. Every year more animals are dumped on the side of the road, left in abandoned buildings or left to freeze to death. Though a shelter is a option, the outcome is often the same; most of the animals will die.
The best and only answer is re-homing. We will continue to build a network of foster parents and potential adopters, in the hope that it will eventually enable animals to skip the shelter system altogether.
